actually you can choose which piece you want to get back. most people choose the queen because she is the most 'powerful'.

To clear up a possible point of confusion, a pawn which reaches the 8th rank ('other end of the board') can become a Queen, Rook, Bishop or Knight of your own color...
But... you are NOT limited to merely replacing a piece that was previously captured. It can become a Queen, even if you still have your original Queen...same with becoming a Rook, Bishop or Knight. So you can have two (or more) Queens on the board, three or more Rooks, Bishops or Knights, etc...
It's theoretically possible to have up to NINE Queens of one color on the board at the same time, IF you can get all eight of your pawns to the last row (rank), and still manage to avoid the capture of your original Queen.

It does not necessarily turn into a queen...any piece that has been captured by the opponent may replace the pawn...it could be a queen, a knight, a bishop...but it does not have any extra power.
